Your June AAC Update: AI, Community Voices, and Making Communication Happen
Published on July 3, 2025
Hello communication champions! June was a busy month in the world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), and we've got the highlights for you. From exciting new tech to powerful community stories, here’s what you need to know to stay inspired and informed.
Technology Takes a Leap Forward with AI
The buzz around Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting real in the AAC world! We're seeing a shift from "what if" to "what's next." Conferences are hosting sessions on how generative AI can revolutionize AAC.
Even more exciting, we're seeing AI features pop up in the tools we use every day. One developer announced a new AI-powered tool that helps fix grammar and spelling in messages, making communication smoother and faster. Mainstream tech is also getting smarter, with companies like Apple and Google building amazing accessibility features right into their phones and devices, which will open up new possibilities for AAC apps in the future.
Your Voice Matters: The Power of Community
One of the most powerful themes this month was the focus on the AAC community itself. More and more, the field is recognizing that AAC users and their families are the true experts.
In the UK, the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists released new national guidelines that were created with help from AAC users and their families. This means the advice is grounded in real-life experience.
We also saw some wonderful community events. A library in Springfield, MA, hosted an "AAC Community Open House" for an afternoon of fun and games with AAC devices. And in Illinois, a new musical called "Let Me Fly" is being developed by parents of an autistic child. It tells the story of a nonverbal boy who finds his voice through an AAC device, bringing a beautiful and authentic story of communication to the stage. These stories show how important it is to connect, share, and learn from each other.
New Resources to Support Your Journey
Looking for some new tools and ideas? June brought some great new resources for families, therapists, and educators.
- Helpful Handouts: The popular blog Omazing Kids released a new free handout with "22 Free and Affordable Targeted Touch Apps for the iPad," a great resource for finding new ways to practice access skills.
- Research You Can Use: New studies showed just how effective AAC can be. One major study, published in an ASHA journal, found that a specific type of AAC intervention helped young children with Down syndrome make big gains in their grammar skills. Another study, published in the journal CoDAS, reinforced that there are no "prerequisites" for starting AAC—everybody deserves a voice, right from the start.
Looking Ahead
It’s an exciting time for AAC! The blend of new technology and a strong, user-focused community is paving the way for a future where everyone can communicate and connect. At qvoice.app, we're thrilled to be part of this journey, and we're committed to building tools that are powerful, reliable, and easy to use.
Stay tuned for more updates, and keep sharing your voices!
